President's Remarks

We have good news for you. The famous National War College Alumni Washington area seminars have returned to Roosevelt Hall. They have been “missing in action” for the last year and a half, but they returned on February 21st with Dr. David Tretler discussing The War of 1812, marking the 200th anniversary of that conflict. It was a tough time for the new nation, and the conflicts on many fronts made names like Perry, Jackson, Dolly Madison, Old Ironsides, and more resonate 200 years later.

We followed up on April 26th with a program marking the 150th anniversary of one of the years of heavy fighting in the American Civil War, with Captain Ryman Shoaf. And in June we will move away from pure strategic history of the United States for a program addressing some of the current issues in strategic policy facing this nation, when we host LT.Gen Jodice ’97 with his presentation on the NATO Libyan Air Campaign on June 4th. That will be followed by our Annual Alumni Day on July 6th. Stay tuned for details.

And as many of you know, the long-awaited History of the National War College is now available, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Janet Breslin, formerly of the faculty, and Colonel Cliff Krieger, Class of ’91 and also a former faculty member. This is the first-ever history of the National War College, and we think you will want a copy.

I look forward to meeting you at these events. You will remember VADM Roger Rufe, whom I replaced this past June, and who has stepped back after serving his two-year term. Under his leadership we are able to move forward in this coming year and restart the programs and outreach that so many of you have enjoyed. I am honored to follow his footsteps.

We are determined to grow our membership, and to do so we have reduced Life Membership dues to $300 and raised our annual membership dues to $30. As a further encouragement, Life Members will receive a 15% discount on purchases from the Association and annual members will receive a 7.5% discount.

Lastly, we are considering an annual fund raising event where we will honor a Distinguished Alumnus/a. This will take place in the fall and more details will follow.

The Association is alive and moving forward; Col Gene Russell is our Executive Director. Call him at 202-863-2306 if you have questions. We wish you the best in 2012.

Gregory “Speedy” Martin

General, USAF, Ret.

President
